University of New South Wales - School of Public Health and Community Medicine
The UNSW School of Public Health and Community Medicine is one of Australia’s newest schools of Public Health.
The former Centre for Public Health was established in 1988 to bring together multi-disciplinary resources to conduct educational programs and undertake research in public health. From its inception until the end of 2000, the Centre comprised the Schools of Community Medicine, Medical Education and Health Services Management. Following a UNSW Council resolution the three schools formally merged into a single entity, the School of Public Health and Community Medicine, in January 2001.
The School of Public Health and Community Medicine builds on the synergies between the disciplines contributing to public health. The School has contributed significantly to the reform of the UNSW undergraduate medical program which provided an opportunity to increase the emphasis on public health and population health within the course.
The School benefits from its affiliation with a wide range of research institutions and Centres. These include the National Centre in HIV Epidemiology and Clinical Research, the National Drug and Alcohol Research Centre, the Centre for Primary Health Care and Equity, the Centre for Culture and Health, the Centre for Clinical Governance Research in Health and the Centre for Health Informatics. The School has launched Muru Marri Indigenous Health Unit which has a growing number of indigenous staff and a wide range of collaborations with UNSW and further afield. The Unit places emphasis on community, linkages, development, and research which is of practical value to participants.
The School also has excellent working relationships with the National Centre for HIV Social Research, the Injury Risk Management Research Centre, the Centre for Population Mental Health, the Centre for Refugee Research, the Australian Centre for Diabetes Strategies, the National Perinatal Statistics Unit, and the Social Policy Research Centre.
The School is committed to “Reinventing Health-policy, practice and systems”. It has three major streams of activity: preventing and managing major public health problems (HIV/AIDS, other infectious conditions, chronic diseases, injuries and violence, drugs, alcohol and tobacco); health services and systems; ethics, diversity and social justice in health. There is a strong overriding commitment through all our work to enhancing the research-policy and practice interfaces. The UNSW School of Public Health and Community Medicine has a strong commitment to activities at local, national, regional and international levels.
The School is also a partner in the Sydney Public Health Consortium with the School of Public Health at the University of Sydney. The School has over 90 PhD students, a number of whom are based in our associated Research Centres. The School has a highly active public seminars program, has developed an extensive Virtual Public Health Library, and has recently launched a Public Health Bookshop.
